Small Footprint, Big Possibilities: the Versatility of the Platypod Tripod System
As a photographer, I’m always looking for ways to get a little more out of my gear and sometimes that means finding a tool that makes the equipment I already own more versatile. For me, the Platypod tripod system has become one of those tools. Platypod's compact, low-profile design allows me to position a camera in places where setting up a conventional tripod isn’t practical or maybe even possible. Here are a few reasons why the Platypod system has become a valuable part of my photographic toolkit.
One Support, Multiple Cameras
One of the things I appreciate most about the Platypod system is that I'm not limited to using it with one camera. I regularly use Platypod with my Canon mirrorless system, but it can also easily be paired with my iPhone. This versatility is particularly useful when traveling. I can bring one compact support system and use it with whichever camera makes the most sense for the situation.
Tabletop Photography: Opportunities Abound
Tabletop photography is one of the most obvious applications for Platypod. I have carved out a small studio space in the basement and while I can work with a standard tripod, my options are limited by the physical space. The same goes for working in natural light on the kitchen table. The compact Platypod base fits easily on a tabletop, allowing me to work close to my subject without dealing with the legs of a traditional tripod. Because the Platypod system allows me to position my camera and my lighting gear, I can easily experiment with various compositions, angles, and carefully controlled perspectives. Having the freedom to quickly move around my set has opened the door to more opportunities to shoot and I’ve been able to capture creative images of subjects ranging from food and beverages to flowers and diecast models using a variety of Platypod setups.
Outdoor Macro: Getting Down to the Details
I’ve recently become more engaged in macro photography which presents a completely different set of challenges. The subjects are small, the depth of field is extremely limited, and even slight camera movement can affect sharpness. When photographing insects, flowers, and other small subjects, the Platypod allows me to easily position the camera close to the ground, in tight spaces, or at unusual angles that would be difficult to achieve with a conventional tripod. The Platypod allows for quick repositioning and the low profile is particularly useful when trying to get eye-level with a macro subject. Combined with a macro lens, flash, and a little patience, the system gives me the stability and positioning flexibility I need to concentrate on composition, focus, and lighting.
Travel Photography: Compact Gear, Creative Angles
Travel photography often means balancing creativity with practicality. I like to travel light, but I don't want to sacrifice opportunities for interesting, or unforeseen, images. The Platypod system is small enough to fit into my camera bag and, depending on the subjects I intend to shoot, I have the option to leave the big tripod at home. On a recent trip to New Orleans, that compact footprint and light weight allowed to move around quickly and comfortably while exploring the French Quarter. I used my Platypod gear to get low perspectives and explore compositions that would otherwise have been awkward to achieve. Paired with a versatile travel lens and my iPhone, the system helped me make the most of opportunities I may have otherwise passed up.
Small Footprint, Big Creative Potential
The Platypod system isn't limited to one type of photography or even one type of camera. The same compact support can move from a mirrorless camera to an iPhone, from a kitchen table to the backyard, and from home to a travel destination. For photographers who enjoy experimenting with perspective, lighting, and composition, having a compact, adaptable camera support can open up a new world of possibilities.
