Traveling Light in New Orleans: My Experience with the Canon RF 24–240mm Lens

For a recent trip to New Orleans, I decided to try something different. In addition to my trusty iPhone, my usual travel setup often includes my Canon R6 and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L, paired with either a telephoto zoom such as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L or my RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L for additional reach. While this combination delivers excellent image quality and flexibility, it also means carrying a heavier camera bag and changing lenses throughout the day.
For this trip, I rented the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 and left my lenses at home. My goal was simple: travel lighter, move faster, and spend more time enjoying the city instead of managing gear.
Why the RF 24-240mm Caught My Attention
The RF 24-240mm offers an impressive zoom range, covering everything from wide-angle cityscapes to telephoto details.

The Advantage of Traveling Light
One of the biggest benefits became apparent almost immediately. Walking the streets of the French Quarter often means spending hours on foot. Between the summer heat, crowds, and frequent stops for photography, every pound matters. Instead of carrying multiple lenses and a larger camera bag, I was able to keep my setup simple:

The Power of Focal Length
New Orleans is full of photographic variety. One moment you’re capturing a broad streetscape that establishes the character of the French Quarter. A few steps later, your attention shifts to intricate wrought-iron balconies, colorful doorways, architectural details, or a musician performing across the street. Later in the day, a passing streetcar, a distant church steeple, or even wildlife on a swamp tour may become your next subject.
Having a lens that can move effortlessly from wide-angle landscapes to tight telephoto compositions means you spend less time thinking about equipment and more time responding to what catches your eye. Rather than stopping to change lenses, or deciding whether a subject is worth the effort, you simply zoom, compose, and keep shooting.
Throughout my trip, I found the RF 24–240mm to be well suited to nearly every situation I encountered. It handled expansive city scenes, isolated architectural details, compressed street photography, and even wildlife during a visit to Honey Island Swamp. While a dedicated wide-angle or telephoto lens may offer better optical performance for specific applications, the convenience of having such a broad focal range in a single lens was invaluable for travel.

Image Quality
One of the biggest questions surrounding an all-in-one zoom is always image quality. While lenses with such an extensive zoom range inevitably involve some optical compromises, I found the RF 24–240mm to perform really well throughout my trip.
Mounted on the Canon R6, the lens consistently produced sharp, contrasty images with pleasing color and excellent detail across a wide variety of subjects. Whether photographing expansive cityscapes, architectural details, or more distant subjects, I rarely found myself questioning the image quality. For travel photography, it delivered results that easily met my expectations for both web use and large-format prints.
I also appreciated the experience of using a native RF lens. Compared to my EF 24–105mm mounted with Canon’s EF-RF adapter, the RF 24–240mm felt more integrated with the camera. Autofocus was quick and confident, image stabilization worked seamlessly with the R6, and the overall package felt well balanced in hand.
Is it as clinically sharp as Canon’s professional L-series zooms? Not quite, and I wouldn’t expect it to be. But that’s also not the purpose of this lens. The RF 24–240mm is designed to maximize versatility while delivering very good image quality, and in my experience it succeeds. Looking back through the photographs from New Orleans, I never felt that the lens held me back. In fact, the convenience of having such a broad focal range available at all times likely helped me capture more images than I would have if I’d been stopping to change lenses throughout the day.
What I Liked and What I’d Do Differently
The versatility of the zoom range made this lens an excellent travel companion. Whether I was photographing sweeping streetscapes in the French Quarter, isolating architectural details, or capturing candid moments from across the street, I wasn’t limited by my equipment. Traveling with a single lens also meant less weight on my shoulder, no time spent swapping lenses in crowded or humid conditions, and fewer opportunities to miss a fleeting moment.
If there was one situation where I wanted more reach, it was during my Honey Island Swamp tour. While the 240mm focal length was capable for many subjects, a few more distant birds and wildlife encounters would have benefited from additional magnification. For a future trip, especially one that combines city photography with wildlife, I’d seriously consider renting one of Canon’s RF extenders to gain a little extra reach while still maintaining the simplicity of a one-lens travel kit.
Overall, the RF 24–240mm accomplished exactly what I hoped it would. It allowed me to travel lighter, simplify my gear, and concentrate on making photographs instead of deciding which lens to mount next. For this trip, that convenience was far more valuable than the small optical compromises that come with an all-in-one zoom.
Would I Use It Again?
Absolutely. For a strictly photography-focused trip where ultimate image quality is the top priority, I'd still pack multiple lenses. But for vacations, city exploration, and situations where convenience matters, the RF 24-240mm proved to be an outstanding travel companion. The ability to cover virtually every photographic situation with a single lens allowed me to focus on creating images rather than managing equipment.
